Tress Rehearsal
Get fabulous hair fit for a bride
By Marni Prichard
Whether you visit the salon every Saturday for your weekly blow
out, or your idea of splurging on personal care is buying permanent
hair color at the drugstore, your wedding day is the one day when
you should throw all care to the wind and splurge for a professional
stylist. Your hair can make almost as big an impact as your dress,
so use your hairstyle to express your individuality. However, choosing
a wedding day style can be stressful enough to make you want to
pull your hair out. The pressure is on, and having a regular bad
hair day is traumatic enough, let alone having one in front of 200
of your closest friends and family on the most important day of
your life.
To ensure that your hair is as perfect as your future husband,
the cardinal rule is to start early. Make an initial appointment
with your stylist well before your wedding day. This is the time
to experiment with your hair. Play around with color, highlights,
length and accessories such as flowers, detailed barrettes or simple
headbands. Remember that your style should not only look fabulous,
but should make you feel just as good. If you’re not comfortable
wearing your hair back off of your face on an ordinary day, chances
are you won’t feel comfortable wearing it that way on your
wedding day either. Also, keep in mind that if you wear your hair
pulled back too tightly, you may end up with a headache well before
you even cut the cake.
Bring your veil and headpiece to the salon and give your stylist
an idea of what your dress looks like. Your hair should evoke the
same feeling as your gown. Are you looking for easy elegance or
something more avant-garde? If you have a period dress, try a romantic
hairdo, whereas if your dress is minimal and sleek, your hair should
be too. “Believe it or not, the wedding gown can also dictate
the texture of the finished hair design,” says Gretchen Maurer,
author of The Business of Bridal Beauty. “A smooth, shiny
updo of curls or glossy stick-straight hair complements a smooth
satin gown, where a gown of sweeping tulle is beautifully accented
by soft flowing curls.”
After you experiment with various styles, make a decision and stick
to it. If you drastically change your hair, you may have to start
from scratch with your stylist. And don’t forget to make your
wedding day appointment as early as possible. If you want a stylist
to be at your beck and call for half the day, give them ample notice.
Saturday weddings can be especially problematic, since it is usually
the busiest day of the week at the salon.
Although most salons can whip up an updo, some salons have special
services and deals reserved just for the bride:
[The article then lists detailed info on seven local salons,
including BeautyWorx:]
BeautyWorx (215-332-1112)
offers a free consultation where the bride-to-be and her stylist
will discuss possible styles, taking into consideration her hair
type, face shape, bone structure, root direction and headpiece.
For the consultation, the bride should bring pictures of hairstyles
she likes as well as her headpiece. The prices are reasonable
(starting at just $30 for the wedding day), and the bride will
receive a 10 percent discount off of her total services if her
bridal party's services total $200 or more.
